  • I love you, Dad.

My dad passed away on 2/3/19 after a long 9-year battle with cancer. He had just turned 57 years old.

I’ve attempted a dozen times to write this post, to translate my emotions into words, and it’s been the hardest thing to do. How can you sum up a lifetime of love for your parent? It’s impossible. My love for him is all encompassing, it is endless, it is everything around me. I am him, he created me and shaped me into the woman I am today. My dad was my biggest cheerleader, he was my guardrails, my paved pathway, my familial compass. How can I navigate this life without him?

My dad knew he was facing the end, yet was strong and courageous until his last breath. Seeing how strong he always was has helped me try and stay strong for him now. My family and I were able to spend his last days with him, saying endless ‘I Love You’s’ and recanting our favorite memories of him during our childhood. I promised my dad my children will always know him, that he will be a part of their lives through me and through the memories he made with them while they were little. He was their ‘Pop-Pop’.

This past Friday we honored and celebrated my dad’s life. It was a day we all dreaded, but a day we all loved as well. Hundreds of people came to show their love and support, it was a great feeling. My dad was a man of his community, an adoring father, a mentor and hero to so many. He wasn’t one to rest or take a day off, he was always present and gave all of his time to his family, his community, and his career. My dad is sorely missed, and living on without him will be the hardest thing I have to do.

    I love you, dad.

    3. Hi Brittany, I just discovered your blog via Instagram and I just had to comment on this post because your story is so similar to mine. I lost my Dad to cancer as well, it was three years ago and he had also just turned 57. He battled cancer for several years but was in remission for my wedding and I am forever grateful for that memory. The missing him never goes away but it does seem to get easier with time. Talking about him helps so keep sharing! You’re not alone.

      1. Thank you so much for your comment, I appreciate you taking the time and that you found my blog! I too will forever hold onto those great memories as well. Thinking of you!
