  • The Refresh vol.0: Your midweek mental pick-me-up

Wednesdays have been a little strange around here lately. You’re midway through the week, trying desperately to make it to the weekend–but Shelter-in-Place weekends don’t have quite the same hue to them. So my Wednesdays have me feeling some type of way.

It’s time to shake things up
I’m going to start something new around here to rid myself of the Quarantine Hump Day Blahs. Each week I’ll share the things that are breathing new life into my routine—and getting me through the week. A little midweek mental refresh, if you will.

1 // The only jeans I’m wearing during quarantine

Apparently if you’re wearing jeans while working from home, the internet (and Sophie Turner) thinks you’re a psychopath. Which, fair.

But last week, after days of wearing nothing but leggings, I put on these Madewell jeans. And they’ve become my favorite wear-around-the-house-but-still-feel-like-a-contributing-member-of-society pant. Highly recommend for those days when you need an extra boost of sartorial productivity.

    Just another casual WFH day

2 // This article by Leann Ford

I love everything Leann Ford (have you peeped her new collection for Crate and Barrel yet?!) and this article was no exception. A beautiful reflection on the clarity that comes from slowing down, tuning in, and stepping into a new way of being.

3 // A plethora of fashionable face coverings

I never thought I would use the words “fashionable” and “face coverings” in the same sentence, but here we are. I’ve been using an N95 mask we had left over from fire season, but I’ve been on the hunt for something that feels a little less clinical.

Jimmy Bower of Head West Marketplace has put together a compendium of local makers and artists who are selling non-medical face coverings. Supporting local businesses, staying safe, AND looking cute while doing it? It’s a win win win. (my kids below in cute handmade face coverings)

Check out the full list here (lots of fun kid options there too!), and I’ve rounded up some of my favorites below.

    4 // Two kitchen islands?!

In times of trouble, I turn to Nancy Meyers movies. I love watching Kate Winslet bumble her way through The Holiday, and The Parent Trap is an old family favorite.

But to me, the creamy white, neutral-but-layered California interiors are always the true star of her movies. Diane Keaton’s Hamptons house from Something’s Gotta Give? Gimme. Meryl Strep’s magical Santa Barbara compound from It’s Complicated? I’ll take two. And I’ll definitely take that kitchen that her character in the movie deems “an eyesore.”

Well, last week I was scrolling and happened upon a snap of Nancy Meyers’ very own kitchen

And…. she has TWO kitchen Islands?!  Now I’ve seen a similar layout pop up twice in my feed, so this is officially A Thing. I am smitten over this one below.

    5 // The recipe I’ve made 8 times in 7 weeks

I’m not exactly what you would call a baker. But this apple crisp recipe is everything. Pure. Crack. I can’t get enough. Pro tip? Go with Pink Lady apples and don’t forget the pecans!

It’s healthy-ish, it’s comforting and it’s got that yummy Americana nostalgia vibe going for it. Apple pie who? My kids request it nearly every night of the week and they usually wear me down by Friday. So it’s become a little weekend treat for our whole fam.

Try it, you won’t regret it.

6 // The spot cleaner I swear by

These days, my kids are eating on the living room coffee table more because, well, #survival. And spills are an inevitable part of life when you have kids and dogs.

I’ve used this Bissel Pet Stain Eraser spot cleaner machine for a couple years now and it works like a DREAM on our vintage rugs. It’s like a spray bottle meets vacuum, so genius! If you have pets, or kids, or an Italian father-in-law that likes to do animated walks around the house with wine in his hand, you need this! I don’t remember what I did before this little gem came into my life, and I don’t want to.

7 // The show that has me in stitches

Have you seen What We Do in the Shadows? Antonio convinced me that we should give this show a shot, and last week we binged the entire first season. We’re all caught up with the second season and I’m already rewatching episodes!

Review: FX Series 'What We Do In The Shadows' Doesn't Suck : NPR

It’s basically The Office meets Vampires and it’s hysterical, I’m literally laughing as I’m typing this it’s that good. You can catch it on Hulu or FX.
