  • I QUIT!

You guys! I quit! I officially quit my job as a corporate controller and holy hell, I never thought this day would come. Last Thursday was my official last day working as a controller for a fintech company in San Francisco, and I’m not sad about it one bit. Today is the first day I am 100% creative, 100% entrepreneur, 100% FREE!

I have come so far these last few years, and I’ll be honest, it took me a long time to be able to replace a decent % of my income through this blog/shop/design side hustle I created for myself. Every day I pushed forward because I believed I could find this freedom and do what I love for a living, and every day I knew the odds were against me but I didn’t give up!

I often get asked, if I was always so creative and entrepreneurial, why did I choose accounting as my career? Well, when I was in college it seemed impossible to have a successful career being “creative”. I went the conservative route and chose a career path I knew would provide me with a solid and predictable foundation and salary. All companies need accountants, right?!  I had significant student loans that I needed to pay off and didn’t have the luxury to dabble in the creative side as a career path. Not to mention, I graduated college a year before the economy tanked. I held onto my accountant path with clenched fists out of fear!

While I don’t regret the skills and experience I’ve gained over the last 12 years, I do regret not believing that I could be successful doing what I actually loved to do.  It took me about 5 years of being an accountant to realize it wasn’t for me, and another 7 to finally make the change!  My first few years of being an accountant, my creative juices were being squashed by the corporate cubical culture and cyclical nature of financial reporting. in 2011 I began searching for a new outlet and decided to start a blog, on a whim, with no real idea on where it would take me. I needed an outlet to be creative, and the blog became exactly that!  The blog then transformed into a home renovation journal and a place I shared everything I enjoy about interiors. A few years later I started the shop, and have since been juggling the shop, blog, babies, family, house, commute, corporate job… the list goes on and it boy it’s been a lot to juggle!

I’m not going to lie, I did really well as an accountant. I am good at it. I am good with numbers, spreadsheets are one of my love languages, but along with the career being a creative black hole, being the workhorse and watching my (male) bosses receive all the credit and dictate my career trajectory was something that I really became resentful about. I hit the glass ceiling more than once and it really weighed heavily on me. Being a woman in corporate finance is tough, and while we live in an era where women are able to achieve more and are clearly fighting for more, I realized a few years ago I would never be taken seriously enough, never have a voice loud enough compared to my male counterparts. So not only was the career choice not for me, it wasn’t a rewarding one to be in either.

Getting to TODAY, this day, 12/4/18, has been a long and exhausting journey, but I did it! I did it! I DID IT!  I’m ready to thrive, to grow, to be my own boss, and to be 100% creative. Thank you to everyone who’s been with me to this point in my weird journey, and I hope you stick around because I am excited for what this new chapter will bring!

    1. Yessssssss Brittany I’m SO FREAKIN EXCITED for you!!! I know how badly you wanted this and how hard you worked to achieve it!! You go girl! I can’t wait to continue to watch you thrive!!!

    2. Congratulations! That is a huge accomplishment. Working for an engineering and construction company I can completely relate to the frustrations of a male dominated industry. I hope this creative freedom allows you to soar.

    3. So crazy to read this! I also have a degree in accounting but have always loved interior design. I quit my accounting job almost 4 years ago to stay home with our son (we have three now!) and have been thinking of going back to school for a different career that would also be financially secure but in a different field. I’ve been torn between that path and a path in interior design. For now I’ve decided to test out both paths simultaneously by taking a pre-req in the spring and heading up the reno of my parents kitchen. Anyways, the timing of reading this is ironic and inspiring. Best wishes and congratulations! 🎊 🍾

      1. Thank you for sharing! All I can say is (and I hate that it sounds cheesy) but pursue what you’re passionate about, with your background in accounting you will be able to grow a stronger design business than others who lack that expertise. Also, just dive right in! You sound like you know what you want to do, and taking on a family project is a great way to get some experience under your belt too!

    4. How exciting! I’m on the same journey and reading this is so inspirational. Congrats! I look forward to watching your continued success in design, especially as a Bay Area local.

    5. Best news ever!!! Congratulations! I’ve been working in that “man’s world” and know how frustrating (and destructive) it can be as a woman for self esteem and more…
This is the best decision of your life trust me. I’ve been following for years since I came across that beautiful credenza you painted in coral and I loved it!
You are creative, you are talented and you’re a woman so the world is your know

      1. Oh man, you were around in the early days haha! Thank you for sticking around and I’m just so excited to see what I can really do now!

    6. A HUGE congratulations girl!!! So excited to see what this new beginning brings!! Thanks for sharing your story and experience and giving me hope for my some day!!

    7. Good for you, Brittany! Your story is a testament to hard work and unwavering vision moving mountains. I am cheering for you from the sidelines. Get it, girl!

    8. I am so happy for you. This journey of yours will be an awesome one. Doing what you love, making people happy and sharing your creative ideas are priceless. I wish all the best and CONGRATULATIONS! Tell Antonio I said HI 🤗

    9. Congratulations! It’s amazing how fear can cripple you! I’m so proud of you and for doing it Girl! Way to go! I hope to do the same one day too! I got to the game late but better late than never! Happy Girl Boss Day- Full Time! Xoxo, Kim

      1. Right?! How it can prevent you from taking steps towards something more rewarding, it’s crazy! Thank you for your kind words, it means a lot truly!

    10. “An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward. So when life is dragging you back with difficulties, it means that it’s going to launch you into something great! So just focus and keep aiming!” (Credit?)
Good for you! Go for it!

    11. So delighted for you. What you have achieved while juggling a full time job and family is incredible. Can’t wait to see what you do next – no pressure!

    12. Congratulations! 🎉🍾🎊 And I’m sure your financial background will be a great asset as a small business owner/entrepreneur. Hearing about your experiences as a woman, even someplace as forward thinking as the Bay Area is disheartening, but baby steps… you go girl!

      1. You’re so right, it is an asset and something I wouldn’t have changed! The transition took time but knowing what a healthy company requires is something I won’t take for granted! Another lesson I learned is to value every single employee for their individual contribution, and to be caring and empathetic in order to have a happy staff. Anyway, lots of lessons learned for which was difficult but I’m grateful!

    13. Congratulations and to happy for you to have the guts to pull the trigger. I am an engineer who wishes she had taken a different route in her career and this post of yours made me cheer out loud. I know how hard it must have been to finally quit and take that leap of faith and I commend you for doing so. I am sure your bravery will inspire others, it’s inspiring for me that’s for sure!

      1. Thank you so much Erin! I feel your pain, having been surrounded by engineers at my last gig I can imagine how draining it can be. Don’t feel like you’re stuck, if you want another path go out and chip away at it until it becomes a reality! Now I’m cheering for you!

      1. Thank you Sophia!! Exactly, I felt so motivated to finally start doing everything I’ve been waiting to do!

    14. I graduated a few months AFTER the economy tanked. Imagine the fun looking for a job… it took me almost a year, and I graduated in engineering, a so called safe path.
      Congrats!

      1. My sister graduated at the same time, she ended up working as a barista, and decided to get her masters to wait it out (although that seemed scary too injuring more debt!) It was a scary time to enter the workforce thats for sure.

    15. Amazing!! You’re such an inspiration. I’m on a similar journey myself – I’ve been a social worker for the past 9 years and studying interior design and photography on the side. I’m hoping and to take the leap to be creative 100% too one day! Congrats! Xx

      1. I love your story Rachel, thank you so much for sharing! Interior design and Photography go hand in hand, and it’s so cool that you have gravitated towards both! I believe in you and am cheering you on for that someday leap!

    16. Hello Brittany,

I saw your kitchen remodel pics on Houzz and absolutely loved it so have been following your blog. Im currently searching for the perfect bedroom furniture. Ever since I saw that pic of the black leather winged headboard, I’ve been looking high and low for something similar…could you tell me where you got it from? Would really appreciate it!
