You guys, today is a majorly exciting day! Today marks the first week of the One Room Challenge™ hosted by Linda of Calling It Home, and guess what? I’ve been asked to be a featured designer! I’ve long admired the work of the bloggers and designers who have transformed spaces during the One Room Challenge™, being asked to design a space this fall season is such a thrill!

I’d like to introduce myself to those I haven’t met yet. Welcome to The Vintage Rug Shop + Design Studio Blog, formerly known (and still sorta known) as brittanyMakes. I am a passionate interior designer/enthusiast who spends her days crunching numbers as a corporate controller in San Francisco. I literally day dream about interiors all day while expertly manipulating spreadsheets and financial reports. I will never discredit my career because it has given me skills to build a successful side gig, a web shop full of vintage rugs and textiles and handmade pillows and sometimes furniture. My products are coveted by thousands and I can barely keep up! (You can read more about my background in my bio)

Back to the One Room Challenge™, my original plan was to make over our master bedroom in our now ‘old’ house (see yesterday’s post for the update on our ‘new’ house). But that idea was quickly nixed as we knew we were moving into a new home within a few weeks. If moving wasn’t stressful enough! I am the type to work best in fast paced, stress inducing environments so filling my plate with projects is my cup of tea!

If you read yesterday’s post, you might have a hard time guessing which space I chose for this challenge since nearly every room is in dire need of a makeover. But guess no more! We are making over the safety orange ‘old’ master bedroom!

Are you blind yet? My goodness this room is orange! It’s very challenging walking into a home painted this way and trying to look past it all to see the home’s potential. I new this room had potential, and considering this will be our master bedroom for probably the next year (the master suite extension I talked about yesterday actually needs a little bit of foundation work, so we are making this room ours for quite a while).

My first course of action was to paint everything white, basically a nice clean reset; a blank slate. My next course of action was to pull together inspiration photos to create a mood board for the vibe I want to create in this space. This is what I came up with:

It’s basically the opposite of safety orange! Creating a mood board is so helpful in my opinion. I first create a secret Pinterest board and start pinning anything that relatively represents the vibe I’m going for in a space, and in this case it is a tight balance of modern and traditional, masculine and feminine, natural and refined, earthy elements in Northern California meets the more eclectic elements in Southern California.  It’s quiet tension folks, and I definitely want to master it in this space!

Once I create the mood, designing with the color palette and textures in mind becomes easier as I know not to steer away from this foundation. I think I’ve got the plan figured out and can’t wait to show more progress next week!
