  • SURPRISE! We Bought A New House!

    Walnut Creek House Before

You guys! Sorry it’s been quiet on the blog lately, but the silence has been for a good reason – we bought a new house! It’s been so hard to keep this a secret these last few weeks while we’ve waited for escrow to close. We got the keys Friday and now own our ‘for-a-very-long-time’ home! We always knew our first home was not our forever home, that we would outgrow it within a few years once our family grew. We weren’t planning to buy a new home this year, we thought we’d look in a couple more years once our kids were fully in school, but like most things in life, not everything goes according to the plan!

    Walnut Creek House Before

Earlier this summer we found a house for sale in the neighborhood we’ve been longing to move to, it was a mid-century architecturally designed fixer upper that just pulled at my heart strings so hard. Needless to say we didn’t get that home, which turned out to be a huge blessing because  it would have been a money pit and our personal lives would have severely suffered. What came of that house was the realization that we were indeed ready for our next home, and it was either make the move now or wait another year, so we took the plunge and began house hunting full speed.

How many of you are familiar with the SF Bay Area housing market?  For those of you who know, I feel your pain! For those of you who aren’t familiar, basically it’s nearly impossible to get a house these days. Houses sell significantly above asking, like hundreds of thousands above asking, and you’re competing with half a dozen or more offers on a home while you’re hoping you stand out amongst the rest some way somehow. There are some tactics buyers and their brokers use to win the hearts of the sellers in hopes they choose your offer, but the competition has been so strong most of those tactics don’t even work anymore.  highest dollar wins, coupled with low inventory, we didn’t stand the chance.

The house we just closed on was our 6th house we attempted to buy over a course of 3 months. You guys, we purchased this home before it even hit the market! It’s unheard of.  The seller of our home was looking to pass his home to a young family and didn’t want to deal with the stress of the market. He told his broker to ‘find a good family to buy this house’. Somehow the stars aligned and now this home is ours!  I hate this term but it’s true – I’ve literally pinched myself a half dozen times because I can’t believe this is real life.

I am so excited to document how we make this home ours, just like we did for our current house (which is currently under contract to be sold!). So stay tuned as there’s so much to share about this new house!

    1. Wow! Seriously?! That’s amazing. We just found out we’ll be moving to the Bay Area – my husband got a job offer in SF that was too good to pass up. I’m absolutely terrified of the real estate market there… (though coming from Seattle we know more or less what to expect). Fingers crossed a nice person wants to sell us their home too!!!! Congratulations!

      1. Thank you!!! And congrats to your husband on his job! I hope you love this area, it’s such a vibrant place to live. I definitely feel like I have my finger on the pulse working in SF as well. Please reach out if you need any suggestions about the area! I’d be so happy to help :)

    2. Congratulations! That is such amazing news! The stars certainly were aligned :) My husband and I just moved back to the Bay Area and have just started house hunting for our family and the market has been so depressing. Hoping we can get lucky soon!

    3. Congratulations! It took us a year to get on the housing market in the east bay and it happened the same way, private sale, which I found on Craigslist! Glad the stars aligned for you!

    4. So happy for you! Very familiar with the crazy Real Estate market, we are in Sonoma County. It will be fun watching you make this your home.

    5. CONGRATULATIONS on your new home. It is so exciting to find a home you love, especially a Mid-Century home which would be my dream home. Looking forward to following you on your journey and to see the transformation of this beauty through your design and style eye. We’ll have to have a housewarming party for you at High Point Market.

    6. SF is like another planet when it comes to real estate! But the Boston market is not easy either. We are a few weeks out from closing on house #2. Like you, this is our for-a-very-long-time house (possibly forever home). We were outbid on 5 other homes (making this house #6), over the course of a year. The sellers of our new house were less interested in getting every penny but more of having the right buyers! We feel so lucky to have gotten our house also. The Boston market is going BANANAS!

      1. Yikes, it does sound just as bad as SF! And congrats on the new home and for not giving up! Sounds like it was meant to be!

    7. I got teary eyed hearing how you the house fell into your family. What a sweet experience, I am so happy for you guys! Can’t wait to see how you settle in. Love you B!

    8. Congrats on your house, Walnut Creek is a great place to live (especially for kids)! We recently bought an Eichler fixer in Concord and actually just saw your old house pop-up on our Zillow suggestions (they’re never-ending). Would you mind sharing which contractor you used for the concrete in your yard? I love what you did with it :)

      1. Congrats on your Eichler purchase! and in Concord! woohoo! Close friends of ours just sold their Eichler in Concord. There are some great ones that need a lot of love. Unfortunately I wish I could recommend our concrete hard-scape guy, but our relationship didn’t end on good terms. Send me an email and I can give you the information of another recommendation! hello@thevintagerugshop.com or brittanymakes@gmail.com
