I’ve had this project on my mind for months! I’m happy it’s complete. It turned out even better than I imagined.
Here are the materials you need:
- 2 x Macrame cotton cord (3mm 50 yds)
- 3 x Household twine
- 30 x 1/4″ brass tubing
- clear braiding bands
- 3/4″ x 36″ wood dowel (walnut or source at your local craft store)
Step 1 – Start prepping an assembly line. First, wrap 30 bunches of twine consisting of at least 30-35 individual strands each by about 16″ in length. Next, cut 30 strands of macrame cord each 3′ in length.
Step 2 – Make the tassels. Take one bunch of twine and trim the edges off with your scissors. Tuck one strand of the macrame cord in the center of the bunch, then wrap an elastic band around the ends. I chose to wrap two bands on each tassel, but one is probably enough. Then, trim the opposite end of the bunch of twine, and flip it up side down.
Step 3 – Thread the brass tubing on each strand of macrame cord then tie around the wooden dowel.
Step 4 – Tape the design you’re going for on the wall, then re-position each strand so that the top of the brass tubing hits the tape.
Step 5 – Turn the entire wall hanging around so you see the backside of the knots. Glue the knots against the dowel, then trim the excess cord and flip the wall hanging back around.
Untangle the tassels and trim the ends as needed.
I love it. What a fabulous piece.
Thank you!
That looks really great! I love how the shiny brass juxtaposes with the wood and cord. Isn’t it the best feeling when something turns out the way you pictured?
YES! Although it took some trial and error, ha!
Thank you!
You should! It’s so amazing in person.
thanks Julia!
This is absolutely stunning! I also LOVE your newly upholstered chairs!! It all works so well together. :)
Thank you!
Love this, Brittany! It turned out great.
Thanks Erin!
Love the tassel wall hanging and how easy it is to make.. The brass tubings just make it Pop!!
xx Wangu
Sooooo this is kind of amazing Britt:)
YOU ARE SO TALENTED!! Love this, I hope I can try this one day.
Thank you!
This is amazing! I might actually be able to do this without gluing my hand to a wall or cutting a worktop in half ^.^ great post!

How much about did this project cost you? It’s beautiful!
how long are the brass rods?
Hi There. This looks lovely and I am hoping to make this. How long are the brass rods? Thanks x
Hi Poppy, I used the 12″ length, and linked directly to them in the materials section of the post!
The materials section says the brass rods are 1/4″, but the link shows that they are 1/8″. Which one did you actually use?
The link is correct, I used 1/8″ tubes! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0006NAKIS/ref=sr_ph_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1485379125&sr=sr-1&keywords=brass+tubes
This link says they are 36″ in length. Do you have a new link? I just want to make sure I have this right. I need 1/8″ brass tubing 12″ long? I wonder if home depo sells something like this
how do you mount this on the wall?
I see a few small nails holding it up!
this is beautiful! great job – i’m so inspired. i have just the right place at some to put something like this. Great new project – thank you for sharing!
I love it… Great job!!!!
Me encanto tu trabajo.. Es realmente hermoso.. Muy creativa.. Felicitaciones!!!
Amazing!!! I’m going to make this for my baby girl’s nursery! Just a quick question – is th brass tubing you used 1/4″ or 1/8″? Your description says the former whereas the amazon link is to the latter. Thanks!!
Good question! It should be the 1/4″.
Love this and it’s perfect for hanging over a bed in earthquake-prone California. How did you attach it to the wall? Thanks for your help!
Hi – trying to re-create this wonderful piece but not sure which item to select on the amazon link you provided there are lots of options and not sure which one the 1/4″ translates to. Thanks!
I love this! How much did it cost to make?
Love this piece! One question though. For the brass tubing, did you just have to buy 30 of them on amazon, or did they come in a pack of 30?
Beautiful! Obsessed with your chairs, could you share what fabric was used for upholstery?
Hi! I’m pricing these supplies at over $100, does that sound right? Thanks!
Yeah, that sounds about right – not the cheapest project but it looks much more expensive!
Hi! I really enjoyed reading about your approach to this project. I love that it is so unique, but not overly ornate. It served as one of the inspirations for a macrame wall hanging I’m making for my sister! Also, I am new to the blogging community and wanted to post about my project and certainly want to highlight this post as one of the inspirations for my final project! Would you be alright with me sharing it in my post? Thanks so much!
Absolutely, thank you! A link back is always welcomed!
Lovely Lovely idea! I am working on this for my new apartment. Taking it day by day because cutting the twine was unexpectedly time-consuming. The brass tubings were expensive so I substituted for rose gold/copper RIGID straws from etsy, cost me about $5 and from the looks of it, it might just turn it well!!!
genius! thank you for the tip!! trust me when I say I did this project 3 times before figuring out a quicker way to cut the twine, and even this isn’t super fast. But it’s great art so a little sweat makes it worth it in the end!
Could you please link the straws you bought? If not all available, were they paper, and how long? I would love to see how yours turned out. Thank you!
Hi! I love this piece and I’m going to try it out this week-end. I am a beginner at yarn art, should I anticipate anything tricky or is this as relatively simple as it seems?
Thanks!!
It’s surprisingly simple! The tassels are really the only time commitment. Good luck and I hope you love it!
This is absolutely gorgeous! I have never experimented with macrame before, but now I must!
What is the length of this when complete? Do you measurements for tubing/tassels for a smaller version ?
You could also use metallic gold straws!
i can’t find brass piping like this anywhere online and looks like the link isn’t working – can anyone recommend where to find?
Thanks!
I just updated the link to an in-stock product!
Brittany,
Thank you for sharing this beautiful macrame with us all! I’d love to try making this, but I do have one question. The materials list calls for “30” brass tubings, but the photo of the finished product has 36 brass tubings and cords. Was your rod 36” in length with 30 or 36 cords of macrame and brass tubings?
Love this project, Santa is in the workroom and I am so happy it is easy to make
Thank you for this awesome project; your instructions made it so easy to follow. I’m half-way through making all the tassels and can’t wait to share the end results! Here are some tips I’ve learned in the process:
I sped my tassel making – (1) I positioned 2 wine bottles about 7″ apart (2) tied one end of my cord to one neck (3) wrapped the cord around both necks (30 loops), (4) cut the wrapped cord in the middle to make 16″ cords, (5) then cut again to make 8″.
A quick google search for “K-S Product Number: 9822” led me to much cheaper KS Brass Tubing (30 + shipping for $47.55).
Just a quick update on this – The instructions say “1/4 inch brass tubing” which is 7mm but the link takes you to tubes that are 4mm. The product I ordered is too narrow so you’ll need to order K-S Product Number: 9825 and NOT K-S Product Number: 9822.
this answers my question.
So bummed. I have 50 tubes that are too narrow and I can’ t thread them…
If the supplier does not have a good return policy, I would consider using the twine from the tassels. If you want it to look thicker, you could combine two or three strands or braid it.
Apologies if this is was covered in the comments above, but how do you get the cord through the tube? I finally have all the materials listed and this looks impossible to me…help!
