I made this table this weekend but have some questions. You really need to use a lot of liquid nail glue inside the elbow pipe joints or else it might not hold the wood top without it falling out of place over time. I had to create a jig to keep the pipes equally squared and level because they are very squirrely until glue cures. I’m concerned about the weight of the cantilevered shelf over time, any advice on simply bracing it into place? Or should I just use more Liquid Nail glue? I ended up cutting the wood piece at 16″ x 18″ so I could use copper pipe clips to screw it on instead of using the liquid nails. Is there a certain amount of weight these can tolerate or is it just based on laptop weight. Thank you.
Hi Lauren! I like that idea too, I cut my wood on the small side so I didn’t have much space to screw in the pipe clips. I noticed the liquid nails is more flexible of a glue, and honestly my table only fits a laptop so I haven’t tried using it for other purposes. I would recommend using a more sturdy glue if you want to place heavier objects on the table. I’ve heard decent things on Goop, a plumber’s adhesive http://www.homedepot.com/p/Amazing-Goop-3-7-fl-oz-Plumbing-Adhesive-150011/100372167 or even this option http://www.amazon.com/Super-Glue-80583-Copper-Epoxy/dp/B000BVS0IW The last option you could use in place of soldering the joints so that the table is the sturdiest it can be.
Thank you for your advice. I will look into other glues or pipe components. For now, it sways back and forth which worries me. I love the color of the copper and I stained the top with a dark walnut like yours. I am determined to stabilize this table so it will last! Thanks
