New Rug Arrivals are in. Check out what's new!
  • the story of our dining room

I’m going to tell you the story of our dining.  Grip your seats, it’s thrilling!

Our dining room began as a cute nook when we first moved in, simple and white walled.  Then, I thought I was getting creative by adding a gold wall gallery, but I just didn’t like it so I ended up taking down.  What made matters more confusing was the choice of rug I made when we first moved in.  I bought a rug during one of Rugs USA’s super sale, that I tried to convince myself that I liked it and that it worked… but deep down I know I should have returned it the minute I opened it.  The colors were all wrong from the picture on the website.  What the heck was I was thinking?

Cheap.  That’s what I was thinking.  Lesson learned? Sometimes you just have to buy what you know will work and not take unnecessary decor sacrifices (yes such a thing exists, decor sacrifices!).

The worst moment was the time one of our friends came to visit and offered to help move out the “bleached painter’s drop cloth” from under our table.  Embarrassing!  To top it off, the weird white splotches in the rug gathered every last bit of dirt which was impossible to get clean again.  First world problems, go ahead and say it!

The rug really was a nasty plague in the dining room.  I had no desire to photograph our beautiful dining table.  I had no desire to finish painting our last 2 dining chairs.  I had no desire to eat at the table.  I was just unhappy and I ended up shunning the space for quite a while.. that is, until I scored a jute rug from Pottery Barn for $50!

A Pottery Barn 5 x 7 jute rug for $50!  I’m still pinching myself.  I was in the store and had it in my hands, thinking “there has to be a mistake here…” but it rung up as $50.  I ran out the door with it, refusing any help loading it into my car for fear they realized they made a mistake.

I ran home after work, swapped rugs, and the world was good again.

I even painted the walls and bought myself flowers!

    2. Your dining set is lovely, and is exactly what my mom has been looking for, for about 5 years now! She saw one like it in a shabby-chic/cottage type of store in Laguna Beach, and when she went back for it a year later the store had closed up. Can you please tell me where you got it? You’ll be her hero!
