Last week I willingly introduced everyone to our entryway…. and I’m still getting over my embarrassment – you see those pumpkins? Anyway, most times our entryway is a full-on mess, like below – a catch-all space with no method of organization and is obviously yearning for a facelift. If there’s one thing I learned in moving to a new place is, you can’t do everything at once which is why our entry has been left on the back burner for this long. It’s time though, so let me show you how I remodeled our entry in 3 easy steps.
Behold, our entryway… Brace yourselves, the before is pretty terrible.
The first step was deciding on a paint color. All of our walls are white, which I totally don’t mind, but it really is a lot of white. I’ve actually been wanting to test out some subtle grey paints to get a feel of what my go-to grey would be, and decided this is as good of time as any.
I picked out two grey paints – Owl Grey by Benjamin Moore, and Behr’s Dolphin Fin. It’s funny, in the can they both look so white, but on the walls they’re extremely different from one another. Owl Grey has blue and green undertones, while Dolphin Fin has brown and red undertones. I learned I prefer a cool blue-grey over a warmer earthy grey. See? You can learn so much about yourself by just throwing some paint on a wall!
I fashioned the coat rack from a 1″ x 4″ x 8′ piece of pine, which I gave two coats of stain in Minwax Dark Walnut, then painted over the stain with two coats of Miss Mustard Seed’s Ironstone milk paint. I was hoping for some beautiful chippiness, however the raw wood just soaked up every ounce of the paint. To distress the coat rack, I sanded the wood down with a rough grit sanding sponge. For the final touch, I sealed the coat rack with ASCP dark wax.
I measured and drilled 5 oil rubbed bronze coat hangers to the 8′ piece of distressed pine, then mounted the coat rack to the wall.
Our entry is now a fully functional space! It’s really a great feeling knowing I’ve eliminated the embarrassment we used to feel when we would greet guests in our loft. Now, onto the next thing!
