  • boxwood wreaths & a first peek at my dining room

I went to my local Trader Joe’s last night to restock my fridge (and drool over their Christmas candies, I mean, who are we kidding), when I spotted something spectacular!  Boxwood wreaths! Just when I thought I couldn’t love Trader Joe’s more, they’re now selling boxwood wreaths.

The DIY-er in me has had me scavenging around town, looking at shrubbery on the side of the road and foliage in people’s yards over the last couple weeks, and until now have been empty handed.  I was sincerely perplexed for a minute there, thinking how the heck am I going to find boxwood to make my own wreath?

Oh, Trader Joes.  I now worship you more than ever.  I think I might go back and get another one, possibly two… you can never have too many wreaths in your house this time of year, am I right?

The Christmas spirit hit me really hard last night.  I started making ornaments, hanging my boxwood wreath, breaking out my Christmas ribbon, and setting our holiday themed dining table.  This is when I realized I haven’t officially introduced to you our dining area. Blasphemy!

I feel bad actually, considering my dining table is one of my favorite pieces in my house, and happens to be my best thrifted finds yet!  I found this set on Craigslist, a table with 2 extension leaves and 6 dining chairs, on sale for $50.  $50!!! That’s basically free.  I actually had to get a storage unit for the set, since my fiancee and I were still living in his bachelor pad at the time.  My dining table story deserves it’s own before and after reveal, so I’ll save the deets for later…

I reupholstered the chairs in vintage Hungarian feather bed covers.  Seriously, the thick bold stripes had me at ‘hello’.  And in case you’re curious, feather bed cover is the same weight and texture as your typical grain sack, they’re just less dirty.  I’m no pro at setting a table, so I just threw everything together as if I were setting a table for my family.  I wrapped each place setting in red and white striped ribbon I found at Michael’s.  I had to go to two different Michael’s locations to get this ribbon, apparently everyone likes it this year.

I also started glittering brown Kraft paper fruit.  They make a nice topper on each place setting, or you can tie some string around the stem and hang them from your Christmas tree! We have a date night this weekend to grab a Christmas tree (or two, you never know!).  I can’t wait.

    1. Really, you are just too cute for words. I have enjoyed your posts since the gilded chair :-) Steal all your ideas!!! Your fiance should marry you this minute before some other guy wisely steals you away from him!!! I am heading to Trader Joes in the morning! Carol

    2. I know you’re planning its own post soon…but could you please provide me with a little information on your dining set? My neighbor gave (GAVE) me one much like yours and I’m in the process of refinishing it. I’m going for the exact look you have. What color paint did you use and what did you stain and finish the top with…it looks amazing!!! Thank-you, thank-you.

      1. Ami! Not a problem at all, I will post the complete tutorial/before & after very soon! if you want a quick response, I sanded the top down and stained (just the top) in Minwax dark walnut. Then, I painted the base in 2 coats of Annie Sloan’s Old White chalk paint. After the second coat was completely dry, I distressed it with a sanding sponge. I’ll have more deets soon, but that’s pretty much the process! Hope this helps!
