New Rug Arrivals are in. Check out what's new!
  • current obsession: paint it black

Over the weekend I was browsing through Veranda, one of my favorite home decor magazines, and spotted Restoration Hardware’s new ad for their distressed black armoires… specifically, their Montpellier Armoire.  There’s something mysterious and striking about this handsome armoire, this giant creature, with it’s aged patina and distressed features that make me weak in the knees.  I want to grab a faux fur blanket, a pillow, and nestle up at it’s feet.

This isn’t the first time I’ve felt this way about a piece of furniture.  Is there a name for this? What does this say about me?

This got me thinking… do I own a black piece of furniture? I DON’T! Why is this? I suppose when I think of buying a piece of furniture, I steer clear from the “glossy black mass-produced” look.  But this shouldn’t rule out any pieces with a warm, aged & distressed black.

Perhaps I’m drawn to the extreme contrast that black brings to a space.  Like this home above, with it’s pitch black hardwood floors laid against bright white walls.

I never realized black painted furniture could feel so warm.  Check this buffet cabinet for example, this piece is so pleasant and inviting, and yet it still retains sophistication with it’s black distressed finish.

Or how about this stunning desk above, with it’s sharp masculine lines and delicate pulls, again, this piece makes me want to cuddle!

I tossed and turned last night before bed thinking about all the pieces I have lying around (ha! if only) that could use a makeover in distressed black.  Sadly nothing quite fits the bill, which means a new Craigslist hunt is in order!

What do you think? Do you agree? Or think I’m coo-coo for wanting to snuggle next to over-sized pieces of furniture?
