  • the gilded wall gallery – part 1

Checking in from Disneyland! It’s a hot one today, and the lines are all at least an hour long, so we decided to take an afternoon break and lay out by the pool.

Before we left on vacation I started working on the walls in our dining nook.  Over the last year I’ve been collecting a bunch of gold and brass mirrors and frames, with the hopes that one day I could make a wall gallery.  My fiancee and I recently moved into our own place, and now there are more walls than I know what to do with.  We decided to take one wall at a time, the first being the walls of our dining nook.

This is the only before picture I could find:

This dining nook has 3 giant 14′ white walls of roughly equal width.  I have plans to paint this nook, just not immediately.  I decided to test my measuring and leveling skills and make a wall gallery with my collection of frames and mirrors.

First, I laid the frames and mirrors out on the floor to get an idea of the layout for the wall.

Second, I traced and cut out each frame and mirror’s onto Kraft paper.  Third, I taped the paper frames to the wall to get the exact placement.

So far so good! The wall is larger than I expected, which I realized after finalizing the layout.  I needed more pieces to fill up the wall space, so I took a trip to the thrift store to pick up some small frames, which I plan to gild in gold leaf to coordinate with the rest of the frames.

Part 2 should be ready this weekend! Now, back to Disneyland!
