Apartment hunting is tough.
It forces you to rank and prioritize various features and amenities to fit your budget and your needs. Some amenities you swear you'd never give up, like a dish washer. But then you find yourself choosing between a place with no dishwasher, or coin laundry. Uggggghh, coin laundry.
We need a place that will take 2 dogs. 2 compact, lazy, low maintenance, super sweet cuddle-muffin dogs. But when a landlord hears 2 dogs, it's an immediate "Ummmmm… we'll get back to you".
I want hardwood floors, a washer and dryer, and a workspace to craft and work on furniture. My BF wants a La-Z-Boy.
Actually, he wants a yard so we don't have to walk our dogs every time they need relief. And he wants a safe and secure parking spot.
We both want to be close to work. Commuting an hour each way for the last 2+ years has worn me out. More importantly, we both don't want to live in a cramped space…
I want windows, lots of light, and a decent kitchen.
And I would LOVE a spare bedroom. But most importantly, I want a place that's "us".
We're attending an open house tonight to view a spacious 2 bedroom, and another appointment tomorrow to see an adorable a 1 bedroom. Crossing my fingers that one of them fits the bill! Wish us luck!
I dont know California law at all, but you should check out if there are laws around dogs. I live in Ontario, Canada, and here they can not discriminate against pet owners. They can have restrictions on aquariums, and exotic pets but they can not deny you if you have dogs or cats. Most people here dont even know that and dont look up their rights as given by the landlord tenant board.

Hi Brittany! I’m stopping by from Centsational Girl. So glad I discovered your blog…I love finding other Bay Area DIY-obsessed bloggers like myself. I can TOTALLY relate to your apartment hunt woes. I had two dogs while living in the city myself and it was a nightmare looking for a place to live.
