New Rug Arrivals are in. Check out what's new!
  • DIY lacquer & gold jewelry boxes

Hellooo! I'm so eager to share this tutorial with you!  I've been holding onto a brand new tube of gold leaf Rub n' Buff for about 3 months now, ambivalent as to how I should use it for the first time.  Should I rub it all over an old picture frame? Or lather it all over a thrift store lamp?  I just couldn't decide. It only took one trip to the Container Store to decide on the perfect project…

I embellished a few lacquer jewelry boxes from the Container Store with gold Rub n' Buff! So fancy!  Here are the materials I used:

    • Lacquer jewelry boxes
    • Scotch Tape
    • Gold leaf Rub n' Buff

I sketched out a few patterns and designs on a piece of paper.  I was going to go with circles and dots, but that was way out of my league.  I decided to start with straight lines, hence the scotch tape!

I didn't realize until I got home that the boxes I bought were the colors of Christmas. I decided to correct this immediately and went down another creative path – the Swiss flag!

and a bit of Greek key…

I got really excited and busted out a free-handed chevron pattern.  Amateur mistake, it came out a little janky, but overall it's still charming!

People all over the blogosphere are calling Rub n' Buff "magic in a tube"…and… I concur!  I'm not sure if I'll replace Rub n' Buff over gold leaf sheets, but no doubt the stuff in this little tube is quite magical.  It's texture is kind of hard to explain.  It's waxy, yet liquid and paintable, vibrant yet has a dull/matte finish, and a little goes a long way!  I think one tube covers 20 sq feet. Crazy!

Please, share your Rub n' Buff experiences.  I would love to know what else you can do with this golden magical paste!
