OK, you got me. I just couldn’t resist. I fell for another trendy DIY project, I repainted the Ikea UNG DRILL frame (or mirror). It was just so easy and rewarding, I had to do it. Here’s a peek at my UNG Drill Mirror re-vamp, which I gave away as a baby shower gift…
I love the lilac color against the pale yellow wall. Complementary colors at their best :) I’ve seen so many versions of the frame on my favorite websites that I decided to gather a few of my favorites to share with you:
Stretch some fabric and batting over cardboard, staple it on the back and tuck it in the frame to get this adorable pin-cushion-like jewelry display

Looking for a more distressed look? Dry brush some paint over the original black frame and you get this frame here. This person also spray painted the mirror with chalkboard paint for a fun doodle surface.

This couple is too cute. I love how they used the frame as a prop to take the most adorable wedding photo.

I am so glad someone did this in gold. Isn’t it glamorous? I think this is exactly what I’ll do for my own UNG Drill mirror. Or maybe in silver… ooooh the possibilities!
You can literally frame anything with this guy and it will look fabulous. Create a monogrammed version by framing some wrapping paper with your letters of choice glued on top…

OK ok, enough adoring the work of others. I’m ready to reveal what I did with this frame! Here’s the back story: one of my close girlfriends is having her first baby and she asked for a little advice on decorating the baby’s room. We both found some crafty ideas online, she went off to do hers (I’m so excited, she wants me to show the reveal on my blog!) and I was a little secretive about mine. I kept my idea quiet in time for her baby shower last weekend so I could give it along with the baby shower gifts. She had shared her plans for painting the babys room, the color of the baby’s bedding, and the furniture, which was all very helpful in deciding on the appropriate color for the frame.
I actually bought the version with the mirror, which she can always remove if she wants to frame something instead. Here’s what the mirror looks like when you pick it up from Ikea:
I removed the mirror from the box and layed it out on a tarp to prep for primer. I took some painters tape and a plastic garbage bag and taped the bag as close to the edge of the mirror as possible. You can also remove the mirror from the back. I actually didn’t think about removing the mirror until I had already started applying tape, so I just went with it.
Once it’s all taped, grab your spray primer and go to town. I applied 2 light coats of primer to cover the black.
I let the primer dry for about an hour, enough time to scarf down some dinner. Next, I grabbed my paint of choice, Rustoleum’s French Lilac in satin finsh. My friend is having a baby girl! She decided to go with a palet of pale yellows and lavenders, so pretty. I applied 2 coats of paint, letting the first coat dry for about an hour, and removed the painters tape 10 minutes after applying the second coat.
I let the mirror dry completely overnight. The next day I wrapped up the mirror along with other goodies for the baby and delivered it to the shower.
She loves it! I think she was surprised to see the mirror as a gift, since it’s not your usual baby shower gift, nor something you’d be able to register for at Babys ‘R Us. Here’s the baby girl’s newly decorated room:
I’m glad I did my due dililgence by asking about my friend’s plans for her baby’s room. A mirror like this has the possibility of clashing someone’s taste if presented in the wrong color, like black, since the frame is bold just by itself. We were both very happy with the outcome, the color I chose matches her baby’s bedding and accent walls perfectly. Do you like it too?
So cute! I love it!
I love these frames! I’m obsessed! The color you painted it was so beautiful and made such a cute gift for a nursery. Great idea :)
I have been wanting to buy this mirror from Ikea for a while now and after seeing all of these beautiful ideas I think I’ll be heading to the store as soon as possible. Wonderful round-up and very cute version of your own!
Thank you! I love the mirror too, you really can’t go wrong with it!
Love this! We’ve had the plain black ikea mirror in our bedroom for a few years but I am going to re-paint it for our nursery now that we are expecting! How many cans of Rustoleum did you have to use??
This looks so beautiful, I want to paint the frame with a gold paint, how many cans of paint/ premier did use? Which brand of spray paint do you recommend? Thank you so much.
